Do you smell bacon? I do...oh wait...that's us.

Day at the beach + suncreen + swimming  - reapplicaion of sunscreen = no sunscreen
No sunscreen + less than tan skin = terrible horrible no good very bad sunburns.

When the idea of having a getaway with my husband first came up, I was beside myself excited about the possibility.  As I thought about it more, though, I was worried that being away from my children overnight for the first time would be more than my poor Mommy's heart could handle.  I pictured myself crying in the shower, incessantly calling to check it...etc.   We had the option of coming home on Saturday or staying an extra day and going to the beach before coming home on Sunday.  I worried that I would be so antsy to get home that I wouldn't enjoy the beach.  I shouldn't have worried.  The phrase to best describe my emotions during the whole trip would be "giddy with freedom."

Some dear friends, who live in the area, met us there with all of the beach paraphernalia one could need and a cooler packed with lunch.  The weather was beautiful, the waves were big enough to be fun but not so big to be dangerous.  It was just lovely.  Now, it would not come as a surprise to anyone that my skin and the sun don't necessarily get along very well.  It's a well known fact that although diamonds are pretty, sunscreen is a white girl's best friend.

As it turns out, sunscreen would have been a nice companion for a Chinese guy too.  When we got there, his "farmers tan" made it look like he was wearing a white shirt.  When we left it looked like he was wearing a red shirt.  A very painful red shirt.  For the last few days we have both been slathering on whatever lotion promises relief and trying to avoid situations where someone would touch us.  It's beginning to subside, and we are beginning to look like lepers with incessantly sloughing skin, but this will definitely be something that we laugh about for years to come.
